Senator Heller Amending Immigration Bill Targeting Gang Members

U.S. Senator Dean Heller filed two amendments to the immigration legislation last week aimed at cracking down on criminal gangs.

The legislation would permit the immediate removal of criminal gang members who are already in the United States, and make sure criminal gang members are ineligible for immigration benefits such as asylum.

The UNLV Immigration Clinic sent a letter of response to Heller’s amendments, which expresses fear that children could be sent back to violent gangs in Central America.

They say the bill would also allow the Department of Homeland Security to arrest, detain and deport long term residents of Nevada who have never been convicted of any crime.
