The Trump administration’s announcement Tuesday that it’s ending the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program spurred reactions from officials across Nevada.
State Democratic Chairman William McCurdy II said on Twitter: “Anyone who supported ending DACA will see the consequences at the ballot box.”
In a statement, McCurdy also accused U.S. Senator Dean Heller and Nevada Attorney General Adam Laxalt of giving the president “the political cover” to make the decision.
Other Nevada groups and leaders, including the Culinary Union, state senator Yvanna Cancela, Reno mayor Hillary Schieve and Clark County Commissioner Chris Giunchigliani have put their names on a nationwide open statement on the website WithDreamers.com.
The statement acknowledges young immigrants’ contributions to society, saying supporting them is “a moral imperative.”
University of Nevada Las Vegas president Len Jessup and University of Nevada Reno president Marc Johnson have both released statements saying they have joined a nationwide group of University presidents petitioning to keep the program in place.
