Washoe County School District Has Thousands In Overpaid Lunch Funds

The Washoe County School District says it has $248,000 in overpaid funds for school lunches from the 2015-2016 school year.

The Reno Gazette-Journal asked for the information on unused funds after the district announced it had an unpaid lunch debt of more than $66,700 earlier this month.

The district was at one point considering giving students with past-due balances different lunches.

The board voted that proposal down, but the district has received more than $8,000 in donations from the community to pay for students who haven’t paid their lunch bill.

The district says no way currently exists for overpaid accounts to donate to overdue ones, but a spokesperson says the option is being considered.
