CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — An opinion by the Nevada Attorney General's Office says state law requires collection of DNA samples from all prison inmates in state custody for felony convictions regardless of when the inmates were convicted.
The Nevada Appeal reportsthat the opinion dated Monday and signed by Chief Deputy Attorney General Brett Kandt responds to a request by the Washoe County district attorney.
The opinion says the law retroactively includes current inmates even if they began their prison terms long before Nevada enacted a 2013 law requiring the samples be collected from all people arrested for a felony.

The law requires that the samples from people not convicted be destroyed and purged from all databases.
