Clark County School District Board Sues Over Reorganization

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Leaders of the Clark County School District want to permanently block some elements of a state-mandated reorganization after board members said their concerns have been ignored.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports the county school board filed a lawsuit Wednesday in Carson City against the Nevada Department of Education and its board.

The reorganization aims to make schools within the nation's fifth-largest district more autonomous, but board members say regulations created an unfunded mandate.

They took issue that an advisory committee made of legislators recently hired a consultant for $1.2 million that district officials were told they had to pay for.

State education department spokesman Greg Bortolin said the state superintendent learned of the lawsuit through the media and said officials would withhold comment until they can review the complaint.
