Las Vegas School District Surprised At $1.2M Consultant Costs

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A legislative committee's decision to spend more than $1 million for a consultant to help with overhauling the Clark County School District is raising eyebrows.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported Friday that an advisory committee voted 5-2 down party lines to hire a consulting group led by Tom Skancke, former leader of the Las Vegas Global Economic Alliance.

Skancke will work under a volunteer community council led by former Station Casinos CFO Glenn Christenson.

Democrats and some district officials say approval of the $1.2 million happened very quickly before other options were considered.

Republican Assemblyman Lynn Stewart says the money will ensure things move very quickly and that Skancke and Christenson have good track records.

The reorganization will shift the balance of power toward individual schools.
