Interior Dept. Signs Off On Clark County Solar Farm

The U.S. Department of the Interior has signed off on plans to build a solar farm on Paiute land in Clark County.

Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell was in Nevada today to visit the site of the proposed Aiya Solar Project.

The 100 megawatt farm would be located some 40 miles northeast of Las Vegas.

The plant's footprint would be about 900 acres in size.

Energy firm First Solar is partnering with the Moapa Band of Paiute Indians to build the facility, which is expected to provide electricity for about 25,000 homes.

The tribe predicts some 300 construction jobs will be created as the plant is built.

There is no timetable yet on when construction is set to begin, or when the plant will be operational.
