RENO, Nev. (AP) — Workers are preparing to excavate soil at Lake Tahoe to clean up after a 2011 underground fuel leak.
The work is expected to begin Monday near Zephyr Cove Resort. Workers plan to remove approximately 2,500 tons of contained soil from an area about 60 feet long, 90 feet wide and 25 feet deep.
The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit says more than a dozen trees were removed from a half-acre area but trees of the same species will be planted after clean soil is brought in.

Officials said Thursday that the resort will remain open during the work, although the cleanup will be visible to visitors.
The Zephyr Cove work is part of a project that began after the fuel leak was discovered five years ago.
