Heads up! Due to a geomagnetic storm this weekend, KNPR's signals may experience intermittent disruptions throughout the state. Our engineers are keeping a close eye on it.

Rewards Offered For Utah Archaeological Vandalism

Federal officials are hoping the promise of a reward will help crack down on stealing and vandalizing of archaeological sites in Utah.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports that the Bureau of Land Management has announced a standing $2,500 reward for information leading to a conviction in any case of looting.

Officials say Utah's San Juan County has more archaeological sites per square mile — roughly 250,000 — than any other county nationwide.

The BLM's Monticello field office says at least 25 incidents have been reported since 2011.

The agency says it does not have the resources to monitor every site and artifact.

The reward is being funded by private contributions from organizations that support the proposed 1.9 million-acre Bears Ears National Monument in southern Utah.
