Utah Unemployment Increases Slightly

Utah officials report a slight rise in the state's unemployment rate.

KSL-TV reports that the Utah Department for Workforce Services says unemployment rose by one-tenth of a percent in March, landing at 3.5 percent. The department says about 51,400 Utahns are unemployed and looking for work.

The national unemployment rate also rose by one-tenth of a percent last month, climbing to 5 percent.

DWS Chief Economist Carrie Mayne says the state increase is likely caused by a good economy drawing people who weren't looking for jobs before to start searching.

According to the DWS report, eight of 10 private sector industry groups added jobs in March. Only the Natural Resources and Mining sector and the "other" category lost jobs.
