Officials have approved a $42 million deal to have two of the shuttered Riviera towers brought down in two separate implosions this summer.
The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority approved the demolition contract with Las Vegas-based WA Richardson Builders LLC Tuesday. The implosions on the Monte Carlo and Monaco towers will take place in June and August. Specific dates have not yet been set.
Before the implosions, crews will use wrecking balls and bulldozers to demolish other buildings, including parking garages and the property's convention center. The contractor must also remove asbestos from the towers and prepare the site for use as outdoor exhibit space.
The authority, which purchased the Riviera in February 2015, eventually plans to replace the 26-acre site with an expanded Las Vegas Convention Center.
