Court To Consider If Solar Ballot Measure Can Proceed

A Carson City court is considering whether a ballot measure to reverse Nevada's rooftop solar rate hike can go forward.

A court hearing on a petition filed by the No Solar Tax PAC is scheduled Monday afternoon. The proposed referendum would return Nevada to old, lower rates and remove any cap on the number of solar users statewide.

If the petition is approved, supporters could start gathering the more than 55,000 signatures they need to place the measure on the ballot.

Regulators approved higher rates for rooftop solar customers last year, after the state hit a cap on net metering and lawmakers directed them to develop a new pricing structure.

Commissioners say it phases out subsidies, while rooftop solar companies implemented layoffs, saying it makes their business model unworkable.
