Culinary Union To Lead Protest Over Health Care Contract

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Nevada's largest labor group is planning to protest outside of Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center over a union health care contract.

The Culinary Union representing 57,000 Las Vegas casino workers said the Thursday protest will begin at 5 p.m. with hundreds of affected members and community supporters expected.

The union said the health care contract affects the health insurance of 275,000 people, including members of the Las Vegas police, Clark County Firefighters and Plumbers and Pipefitters unions, among others.

The union accuses Hospital Corporation of America of stalling negotiations but the health care company said those claims are misleading and unnecessarily disparaging.

A hospital spokesman said they will continue to negotiate in good faith for a resolution.

In addition to Sunrise, the company also operates Southern Hills and MountainView hospitals.
