CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — State auditors say Nevada state museums aren't doing a good job of keeping track of the toys, books and medallions they have in their gift shops and could be leaving the door open for theft.
Legislative auditors said staff members are often adjusting inventory numbers in their computer system but not leaving a record on why. The shops are also improperly recording deliveries valued at thousands of dollars.
Auditors warn that the sloppy record-keeping raises the risk that the stores will lose merchandise, won't catch theft and will run out of products without warning.
Museum officials blame the problems on chronic staffing shortages from recession-era budget cuts and layoffs, and a glitch-prone cash processing computer system that they plan to replace by summer.
