Gay Rights Advocates Protest LDS Church Decision

Gay rights supporters are opposing new policies issued by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints regarding same-sex couples and their children.

On Thursday, the church released an updated handbook for leaders of Mormon congregations saying members in same-sex marriages can be kicked out, and barring their children from being baptized unless they disavow same-sex relationships.

About 50 people gathered Sunday outside Temple Square in downtown Salt Lake City on Sunday calling the new policies bullying to children.

Elder D. Todd Christofferson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles says the new policies are designed to protect children from conflict, not to limit them from opportunities in the church.
