Nevada State Prison Added To National Register

The Nevada State Prison is now on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Reno Gazette Journal reports the prison in Carson City was added to the national list on Friday.

The prison first opened in 1862, and was closed in 2012.

The citation notes the prison's use of labor as a rehabilitative method of punishment from its founding through the 1960s.

There are 373 other nationally designated historical places in Nevada.
