Group Asks Court To Suspend School Choice Program ASAP

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — A group that's suing over Nevada's new Education Savings Accounts is asking a judge to suspend the program while court battles play out.

Democratic former state Sen. Justin Jones and others filed the request for a preliminary injunction in Carson City on Tuesday. They filed a full lawsuit against the program several weeks ago on behalf of several Nevada families.

The program allows parents to claim the majority of their child's per-pupil state funding and use it for private school tuition or other educational expenses. More than 3,500 people have applied, while funds aren't expected to be disbursed until February.

The Nevada Attorney General's Office says it plans to defend the program and respond to the lawsuit by Nov. 9. No hearing date has been set for the injunction request.
