Grocer Finds Buyers For 36 Stores In California, Nevada

BELLINGHAM, Wash. (AP) — Grocery chain Haggen has found buyers for 36 of its stores in California and Nevada.

The Bellingham Herald reports the company said Monday it will sell one Nevada store and 27 in Southern California to Smart & Final LLC. They will sell eight Southern California stores to Gelson's Markets.

The deals are part of Bellingham-based Haggen's bankruptcy plan to downsize from 164 to 37 stores and leave the Southwest market.

In September, Haggen asked a bankruptcy court for permission to close 100 stores, including all of those in California and Nevada.

Haggen has now filed a motion in court to establish a bid and auction process for the rest of the stores it announced it was closing.
