Famed Lawyer To Help Nevada Defend School Choice Program

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — The Nevada Attorney General's Office is contracting with a famous lawyer to defend the state's Education Savings Account program in two pending lawsuits.

The Nevada Board of Examiners voted Tuesday to approve a $10,000 agreement with Bancroft, the law firm of former U.S. Solicitor General Paul Clement.

Clement has argued more cases before the U.S. Supreme Court since 2000 than any other lawyer. He represented states challenging Obamacare and represented Hobby Lobby in its bid to not pay for insurance covering certain contraceptives.

The attorney general's office says the state needs Clement because the eyes of the nation are on the sweeping, Republican-backed school choice program.

The $10,000 contract covers an initial consultation, while the office plans to seek another $285,000 for Clement's help defending the program in trial court.
