Haggen Files For Bankruptcy Protection

After struggling for months, supermarket chain Haggen Tuesday filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

The grocer has been floundering since buying 146 Albertson's and Vons stores last year in Nevada and several other Western states.

With one move. Haggen expanded from an 18 store chain in the Pacific Northwest to a regional player all down the West Coast.

But after failing to win over shoppers, Haggen cut worker hours and laid off some employees earlier this summer. It had planned to close almost thirty locations.

Now, Haggen is hoping to reorganize itself in bankruptcy.

There is no word on what will happen to Haggen stores in Las Vegas.
