NV Energy reported Friday the cap for net metering in Nevada has been reached.
That's the cap that allows consumers to put rooftop solar panels on their homes, have them tied to the electric grid, and receive credit from the utility for excess electricity the panels generate.
The Public Utilities Commission met Friday to discuss a variety of proposals concerning the rooftop solar industry, with a vote possibly coming by Wednesday.
Net metering and the cap on it has been at the center of an ongoing battle between the rooftop solar industry and NV Energy. The solar industry says without net metering the industry will die and thousands of jobs will be lost.
The power company says the practice pushes costs from solar customers to non-solar customers. It would like solar panel owners to pay a tariff.
Friday’s announcement comes after a report from the PUC that casino companies MGM, Wynn and Las Vegas Sands would collectively need to pay $131 million to leave NV Energy's grid, with MGM needing to pay just under $90 million of that figure.
