More Charges Against Nevada Woman In Puppy Slaying Case

PAHRUMP, Nev. (AP) — Charges were added and bail was increased to $50,000 for a Nevada woman accused of taking her children with her to abduct and kill a neighbor's dog in a town about 60 miles west of Las Vegas.

Chief Pahrump Justice Court Clerk Alisa Shoults says a judge on Wednesday appointed a lawyer for 40-year-old Maria Furtado and set an Aug. 26 court appearance and Sept. 2 preliminary hearing.

Defense attorney Lisa Chamlee didn't immediately respond to messages.

Furtado faces felony child abuse and coercion and misdemeanor firearm, theft and stolen property charges.

Investigators say her 3-year-old and 15-year-old children were with her during the Aug. 9 incident, and she had the teen shoot the dog at least once.

Investigators believe Furtado was retaliating after the puppy killed her pet ducklings.
