LAS VEGAS (AP) — Authorities say a rookie Las Vegas police officer who was grazed in the neck by a gunshot struggled over a handgun with a 54-year-old man who was shot and killed by another officer.
Police on Monday identified the wounded officer as 28-year-old Evan Hogue, and the veteran officer who fired shots that killed James Michael Todora as Brian Kroening.
The shooting happened about 9:30 a.m. Friday after Hogue and Kroenig stopped Todora driving a gold Jeep Grand Cherokee on busy Sahara Avenue several blocks west of the Las Vegas Strip.
Police say Todora invited the officers to shoot him before Hogue tried to take a handgun from Todora's hand.
Hogue was hospitalized and released, and he and Kroening were placed on paid leave pending departmental reviews of the shooting.
