Interim Washoe County School Boss Davis Approved For Job

RENO, Nev. (AP) — The Washoe County School Board has voted to promote interim schools superintendent Traci Davis to the permanent position.

The former Clark County school official was approved Friday on a vote of 5-2.

Board members Nick Smith and Veronica Frenkel opposed the permanent hiring. They wanted to give other candidates a chance to apply for the position.

Davis' backers say she proved herself during her eight months as interim superintendent. She becomes the first African American to lead to the school district encompassing Reno and Sparks.

Former Superintendent Pedro Martinez hired her as deputy superintendent in 2012. He left the job last year when the board bought out his contract after a lengthy legal battle that began with a dispute over his resume, open meetings violations and his temporary resignation.
