CARSON CITY (AP) — Federal officials have awarded more than $4 million in federal grants to help combat wildfires and protect sage grouse habitats in rural parts of Nevada.
The federal Department of the Interior and Sen. Harry Reid's office announced Friday that Nevada will see around $4.3 million in grants as part of a $10 million federal project to expand fire protection across the country.
Around $3.9 million was awarded to the help restore native plant life in the Sheldon-Hart Mountain area, which covers parts of California, Oregon and the north-eastern corner of Nevada.
Federal officials also awarded $395,000 to help support sage grouse habitats and other wildlife. The grant covers more than 4 million acres in Nevada and California, and is designed to help protect vulnerable sage grouse populations.
