CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — An Assembly committee has passed a bill that would designate more Nevada elected offices as nonpartisan.
The Assembly Legislative Operations and Elections Committee voted 6-4 on Thursday to approve AB320, which was sponsored by Republican Assemblyman Stephen Silberkraus. The measure is now headed for a vote of the full Assembly.
Existing law designates some races as nonpartisan, including ones for judges, school board members and regents of the Nevada System of Higher Education.
The bill adds to the list of races in which political parties aren't listed. The county clerk, constable, district attorney and assessor are among the new additions.
Supporters say political affiliation has little bearing on those offices, but opponents say the party designation gives voters more information about a candidate in a low-profile race.
