Construction Beginning On Southwest Las Vegas Aquatic Center

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Officials are marking the start of construction of a new indoor aquatic center southwest of Las Vegas.

County Commissioner Susan Brager and Howard Hughes Corporation executives are due to take part in a ceremony Monday at the Summerlin Aquatic Center, next to the Wet n' Wild commercial water park on Fort Apache Road.

The corporation is building the facility to turn it over to the county when it's complete.

The nearly 25,000-square-foot project has been on the boards for 10 years, but was stalled during the recession.

It'll have a 25-meter-by-25-yard lap pool with 10 racing lanes, and a 9-foot deep section for scuba classes.

Another pool with a handicap access ramp will be for water aerobics, swimming lessons, physical therapy and other uses.
