NV Lawmakers Reviewing Bill to Make Expiring Taxes Permanent

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Nevada lawmakers are reviewing a proposal to make a number of expiring taxes permanent.

The Senate Revenue and Economic Development Committee will review SB 483 on Thursday.

The bill would make a number of temporary rates on the payroll tax and a sales tax permanent. The bill also raises taxes on cigarette packages from 80 cents to $1.20 and raises the mining industry's payroll tax rate to the same level covering financial institutions.

The taxes were created in 2009 and lawmakers have temporarily extended them every two years. Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval called on lawmakers to make the group of so-called "sunset taxes" permanent in order to help fund his education initiatives.

Extending the expiring taxes would raise around $545 million over a two-year period.
