Bill would Significantly Cut Power of Public Worker Unions

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Union members are strongly opposing a bill seeking to dramatically change Nevada's collective-bargaining rules for public employees.

Republican Assemblyman Randy Kirner is sponsoring AB 182 and testified in favor of the bill Wednesday.

The bill includes a number of significant changes to public worker unions including barring managers from joining unions and requiring public notice of union and government contract negotiations.

Kirner said the bill was an attempt to restore balance in contract negotiations between governments and unions.

Union representatives flooded hearing rooms in the Legislature and in Las Vegas to oppose the bill. Las Vegas mayor Carolyn Goodman testified against the bill and said she supported collective bargaining rights.
