Bill would Allow Las Vegas School District to Deconsolidate

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Nevada lawmakers are planning to review a bill allowing the break-up of the Clark County School District.

A group of Assembly Republicans led by freshman Assemblyman David Garner is sponsoring AB 394 which is scheduled for a hearing Monday in the Assembly Education Committee.

Garner said he's bringing the bill forward because the current school district has too many layers of bureaucracy and parents feel like they don't have a way to make their voices heard.

The bill would allow local governments to draft a plan for an individual school district which would then need to be approved by the state board of education before officially breaking off.

Clark County School District Lobbyist Joyce Haldeman said the district would oppose the bill due to unanswered fiscal and legal questions.
