A festive potpourri of concerts, comedy shows, food, and a museum exhibit for your early Advent season

Dec. 8-9

Jim Brickman's — A Joyful Christmas
Joyful is an apt description of Jim Brickman's music, especially when it's an eclectic mix of Christmas standards and Brickman's own non-holiday hits. For piano novices, this concert offers a festive night with smooth tunes; for piano afficionados, it's an opportunity to appreciate Brickman's signature virtuosity and seeming ability to play two melodies in tandem.

A powerful story of memory and its fragility, The Tale tells the story of Jennifer Fox, a documentarian who is forced to relive early sexually abusive encounters when her mother finds Fox's childhood writings about them. Followed by a live Q&A with the filmmaker herself, Jennifer Fox, moderated by writer Amanda Fortini, it's a harrowing and thought-provoking exploration into the impacts of childhood sexual abuse, and how the mind copes.

The holidays are the time of the year for tradition and the reminder of things that have persisted through generations. But this period also marks an oncoming change for the Las Vegas Philharmonic. Long-time conductor Donato Cabrera is at the podium for the last time in the 2023-24 concert season. See him leading the Philharmonic in A Very Vegas Christmas, a collection of carols, holiday favorites, and heartwarming songs that are fun for the whole family. Who could ask for a better swan song?

Dinner (or lunch) and a show? Yes and yes, say the organizers of the Tamales and Mariachi Festival. And thank goodness, since a day of live music and hearty holiday treats is an ideal way to put some feliz in the collective Navidad. In addition to performances by five mariachi bands (including Grammy Award-winning Mariachi Los Camperos), food, and tamale-making classes, there will also be plenty of drinks for the grown ups and crafts for the littles, making this a fiesta all ages can enjoy.

In an entertainment city fraught with decision fatigue, Poor Richard's Players has a theatrical solution: Their Shoelaces in Paris show, which returns this year for the first time since 2015, aims to present 30-ish plays in the span of 60-ish minutes. Impossible, you say! Not really, when you have an ensemble of pros, a diverse repertoire of bite-sized shows, and an audience primed for antics. Drama, comedy, tragedy — no decision necessary, you'll see them all!

Don't let John Waters fool you. Yes, he was the brains behind the iconic, bubble gum masterpiece that was Hairspray the Musical. But his broader body of work more often tilts irreverent, raunchy, and oh-so-R-rated — think Multiple Maniacs and Pink Flamingos. That holds true for his one-night-only comedy show at the Virgin Hotel's 24 Oxford, titled A John Waters Christmas. At its essence, it's holiday entertainment for the scrooges among us, provided said scrooges don't take themselves too seriously. After all, there's a reason Waters refers to himself as the Old Saint Nick of Nutcases!

Las Vegas arguably wouldn’t exist without developments in mass national transit. This photography and memorabilia exhibition, Desert Skyways: 75 Years of Clark County Aviation, looks at air travel, which has played a critical role in the city’s growth as an international tourism hotspot. Staged at the Clark County Museum, its companion pictorial exhibit will be on display at the Howard W. Cannon Aviation Museum in Terminal 1 of Harry Reid International Airport through Jan. 22. The airport exhibit is free to visitors and open 24 hours a day. Clark County Museum is open 9a-4:30p. The show runs through Feb. 18.
