Have a blast at these late July musical and literary events

New York Voices

Jazz Concert

July 28-29

Sponsor Message

The quartet that makes up New York Voices want all prospective audience members to know: You don’t have to be a jazz fan to enjoy! While the group does center jazz classics, they also ensure they’re spicing up their repertoire with covers from other genres — an approach that allowed them to celebrate their 35th (!) anniversary last year. If you’re looking for that authentic New York coffeeshop jazz vibe, you’ll find it at Myron’s next weekend. Friday 7p, Saturday 3p and 7p, $45-75, Myron’s at The Smith Center, thesmithcenter.com

Something Rotten

Theater

Through Aug 5

Something Rotten this way comes … wait, come back, that’s just the name of the show! In fact, Something Rotten couldn’t be further from the truth, since the production is about as fresh as you can get: It’s full of cutesy dance numbers, catchy songs like “Make an Omelette” (which goes well with a side of Hamlet), and creative storytelling that satirizes the Shakespearean mythos. It is Tony Award-nominated, was a Broadway must-see for the two years it ran, and is now coming to us right in our backyard courtesy of Super Summer Theatre. If brevity is the soul of wit, then I’ll leave it at this … 8p, $20, Spring Mountain Ranch, supersummertheatre.org

Rock/Electronica Concert

July 21

If the singalong atmosphere of Broadway isn’t up your alley, then don’t worry — there’s another musical opportunity on the other end of the spectrum. Groundbreaking, an alternative rock and electronica music project known for their beat-dropping hit “LOL” and the more recent “Fire of Our Past,” is performing at The Space. As a bonus for superfans, vocalist Sean Harper will hold a post-show meet and greet. 7:15p, $20, The Space, thespacelv.com

The Bitter Past: A Mystery

Book signing

Sponsor Message

July 22

The nuclear thriller genre is very much in the current zeitgeist *cough* Oppenheimer *cough.* So, Bruce Borgos holding a book signing of his third novel, The Bitter Past, at the Atomic Museum feels very relevant. His story combines common midcentury mystery tropes — dangerous scientific discoveries, Russian spies, the FBI, and rugged American individualism — playing out against the backdrop of the Nevada desert. The 320-page book just came out July 18, so you can be among the first to grab a copy. 1-3p, free, The Atomic Museum, atomicmuseum.vegas

An Evening With the Phantom

Opera

July 27

An evening with the Phantom might sound a bit spooky, especially if you’re familiar with what happens to Christine Daaé when she does just that in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s classic opera. Have no fear, though, there’s nothing frightening about this show, other than how good the music promises to be: Evita, Cats, Sunset Boulevard, and The Phantom of the Opera all round out an evening of performances by Rose Kingsley, Allan Glassman, and other Broadway and Metropolitan Opera vocalists, conducted by Gregory Buchalter. (CGI cats and falling chandeliers not included.) 7-8:30p, free, Clark County Library, thelibrarydistrict.org
