Looks like a recent piece in ARTINFO limply deriding the Vegas arts scene as half-baked, immature and inert is getting some blowback:
Andrea Maricich, an art collector and Vegas resident, referred to the piece as "essentially a piece of poop." Michelle Quinn Andelbradt, president of MCQ Fine Art and a former curator for theBellagio and CityCenter, wrote that I "obviously take great pride in decidedly slamming a city and subsequently a community without any thorough or thoughtful research." She also pointed me to Las Vegas Weekly writer Kristen Peterson's response to the story, which is pointedly titled "Suck on This." Some reactions we've received certainly have merit. Painter Laura Napier pointed out that I overlooked the Las Vegas Contemporary Art Center, founded in 1989 by a group of art students and faculty from the University of Las Vegas. Dedicated to presenting visual and performing art to the Vegas community, the center hosts rotating exhibitions, performances, artist talks, and panel discussions.
Not to go all salt-in-wound or anything, but as long as we're taking our licks, here's a wayback blast from David Guterson on Green Valley in 1992.
