Uber Insurance Bill Lands On Assembly Committee's Desk

NPR

Another effort is underway in the Nevada Legislature to allow ride-share apps to roll in Nevada

An Assembly committee is expected to vote Friday on a measure that would effectively allow Uber, Lyft and other ride-hailing companies to operate in Nevada.

The Assembly Commerce and Labor Committee will hold a hearing and vote on Senate Bill 440. In April, the Senate approved the measure along party lines.

The measure initially created a regulatory insurance framework for so-called for transportation network companies, like Uber and Lyft. But, the bill was amended to allow businesses that meet insurance requirements to operate in the state, without being subject to the same regulations governing taxicabs and public utilities.

A bill that would have allowed ride-hailing companies to operate in Nevada failed last month in the Senate after also failed when Democrats blocked it, objecting to Republicans blocking proposed amendments.

Senate Bill 439 was declared exempt two weeks ago, and can be reconsidered for a vote any time before the 2015 Legislative Session ends in Carson City.  The 78 th session of the Nevada Legislature is scheduled to end on June 1.
