The Las Vegas Review Journal is reporting that Las Vegas Constable John Bonaventura required employees to give him kickbacks.
It has been reported that two former constable employees admitted that they were forced to give thousands to Bonaventura over a period of a year, calling it the Bonaventura tax. Both officers asked to remain anonymous. One of them said he tracked all transactions through his bank statements. The officers said they were told the money would be used for lobbyists or for a re-election fund.
If these allegations are true they could be potential violations of state ethics laws as well as federal laws forbidding public officials from receiving illegal gratuities. Bonaventura's office denied the allegations but made no other statement at this time.
