VA Hospital In North Las Vegas Struggled To Keep Up With Need

A new report from the Department of Veteran Affairs Office of Inspector General shows the VA hospital in North Las Vegas is struggling to keep up with patient flow.

The issue was brought to light last October when the Las Vegas Review Journal first reported on the story of the late Sandy Niccum. According to the story, VA workers had only checked on Niccum a couple times and left her waiting in the emergency room for more than five hours.

The report says hospital staff was tending to patients deemed to have a greater need. The Review Journal says the hospital’s target is for less than 10 percent of emergency patients to have a waiting time of more than six hours. But the federal investigation found the facility met that target only one day during the week of the incident. VA officials are working to expand the emergency room by another 14 beds at a cost of $16 million.
