Mark Twain Cove? Not Likely

The chances of naming a Lake Tahoe cove after literary master Mark Twain are bleak due to allegations of racism. The Nevada State Board on Geographic Names has indefinitely tabled the request to honor the author after officials with the Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California opposed the bid.

Tribal leaders believe Twain is undeserving of the honor because he made derogatory comments about the Washoe in his work. A University of Nevada, Reno professor says the allegations are irrelevant since Twain insulted everyone in his literature. Twain assumed his pen name writing as a reporter for a Nevada newspaper in the 1860s.
