According to a recent New York Times article, accidental shooting deaths resulting from children mishandling family firearms are undercounted by half. The reason for this is these deaths are often classified as homicides and not accidents.

The shooting deaths at Sparks Middle School were not accidental.  But among the many issues raised by that incident, and also raised by accidental shootings, is how children get access to guns.
