Back in December, the USG gypsum plant announced it would close its doors... and basically shut down the town of Empire, NV. Nearly all of Empire’s residents (and many from nearby Gerlach) relied on the plant. LA Times reporter Ashley Powers visited the plant in March. We check in to see how the townsfolk are faring, and find out how the housing boom led to the eventual bust of Empire.
