Elko County Moving Forward With Exploration Of Shorter School Week For Rural Schools

Some of Elko County's smaller, rural schools may get a shorter school week.

The Elko Daily Free Press reports the Elko County School District approved plans to look into going to a four-day school week at Independence Valley, Ruby Valley and Mound Valley Elementary Schools.

Those are smaller, one-room schoolhouses, and parents had complained to the school district that traveling to and from the schools five days a week was difficult.

Since the district has decided to explore the option of reducing the school week, it now has to come up with a plan for that.

Proposals range from eliminating school on Mondays or Fridays, or potentially in the middle of the week.

The district has to also determine how to measure student performance at the schools if the school week is shortened, as students will have fewer instructional hours.
