Before retiring as Yellowstone’s chief wolf biologist in 2022, Doug Smith spent nearly three decades reintroducing wolves to the national park. Once listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act, the gray wolf population gradually stabilized thanks to Smith’s watchful eye and hands-on approach, and their return helped balance the park’s ecosystem as a whole.
