Funding for Nevada higher ed is changing. Here's what it could mean for colleges

UNLV

A year ago, an outside consulting firm started looking at Nevada’s higher education funding. Based on their recommendations, the Board of Regents is considering changing how those funds are allocated.

That could mean taking money away from the state’s accredited research universities — UNR and UNLV — and giving it to the state’s two-year colleges.

Would that cripple efforts by those universities to grow their medical schools, which is seen as one prong to fight the state’s housing doctor shortage? What about other studies that, in the last 10 years, have led to the naming of UNR and UNLV as top tier research institutions?

And on the community college side, what are they asking for? How would this additional funding be used?
