Law enforcement, lawmaker discuss gun laws in wake of UNLV shooting

The UNLV shooting of two weeks ago and the worst mass shooting in U.S. history six years ago. Both of those in Las Vegas. Both devastating to the community here and people from around the world.

At the same time, Vegas, always a major tourist destination, is becoming a bigger worldwide stage. We’ve always had the massive New Year's Eve celebration on the Strip; there’s the July 4 fireworks.

But it just keeps getting bigger. Two years ago, the NFL Draft was held here. In November, Formula 1 held its first race here. And in February, the Super Bowl is coming.

And every time one of those events happen, police here prepare for the worst. Because we had the worst. And we’ll get into what police have learned and what’s changed in reaction to our shootings.

At the same time, you’ve heard it for years, but the voices are getting louder: People want more than the preparations, more than reactions. They want steps to be taken to decrease the likelihood of those shootings.

What works, though? Few expect any changes to come from Congress. So what might work at the state level?

Guests: Dallas Harris, state senator, Nevada; Sheriff Kevin McMahill, sheriff, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department; Patricia and Manuel Oliver, activists
