What are they hiding? Open records laws not always followed in Nevada

From time to time, newspapers and other media outlets want to get public documents from government agencies. So they make public records requests.

Nevada laws grant almost unlimited access to public records, while protecting reporters seeking information. At least, that’s what’s written.

In practice, it’s a different story. Getting public records often leads to court battles and can end up costing a lot for either the reporters or taxpayers.

That’s has been the subject of a recent investigative effort by the Las Vegas Review-Journal. After the murder of reporter Jeff German in the summer of 2022, the RJ started a series called “What Are They Hiding?
