The number of burros is growing so quickly, and people are hitting so many of them with their cars that elected officials are begging the federal government to do something about it.
Mohave County Supervisor Steve Moss says that four burros were hit by cars in the last month. Last year, the number was about 10 car-burro accidents. He blames the federal Bureau of Land Management, which is supposed to keep the population to round 400 animals in the area.
Instead, Moss told “KNPR’s State of Nevada,” the number has mushroomed to between 1,400 and 1,800. Moss said if someone dies from a collision with the animals, which can weigh several hundred pounds, the BLM “will have blood on their hands.”
Moss said he doesn’t want to kill the animals. But he is suggesting contraception or sterilization for animals. He said the BLM hasn’t been responsive to the county’s suggestions.
