When a person cannot take care of themselves, because of mental illness or incapacitation, they may go through a guardianship hearing. And the courts are supposed to forward those records to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System to prevent those with mental illness from obtaining guns. But an audit sparked by a recent articlein the Reno Gazette-Journal showed that courts in Nevada hadn't forwarded almost 2,000 of those records to the system. How does that backlog hurt efforts to keep our communities safe?
