Historian Andrew Carroll has a new book designed to showcase odds and ends of U.S. history that he thinks are significant, but overlooked. It's called "Here is Where: America's Forgotten History."
Our dubious claim to fame is the 1964 incident in which a graduate student in climate studies and his team chopped down what was then the world's oldest living creature -- a bristlecone pine that stood on the north slope of Wheeler Peak in Nevada's Snake Range. The tree's age was not apparent until after the fatal deed.
