In 2004, the CIA carried out one of the first targeted drone killings. The target was Nek Muhammad, a Pakistani tribal leader who fought against the Pakistani government. In a New York Times article, writer Mark Mazzetti notes that there may be a shift away from drones as new CIA Director John Brennan has expressed interest in moving the CIA back to a more traditional role of intelligence gathering.
