Be-longing Las Vegas: Stories of Creating Community in Las Vegas

Tweet Share on Facebook Share on Google+ Email

    What is Be-Longing Las Vegas?

The series takes us into the lives of people making Southern Nevada home in their own ways. It's an exploration of the central and fascinating themes of connection and disconnection in Las Vegas.

Adam Burke  received the Bronze World Medal for this series at the 2009 New York Festivals Radio Programming & Promotion Awards.

The "mission" was to report on people creating their own sense of community, finding people making connections in a region where it's well documented that people feel isolated and dis-connected. Hence the title, Be-Longing Las Vegas, finding a sense of place, a sense of belonging.

The stories aired during KNPR's State of Nevada and were complemented with in-studio guests and discussion about:

    • How people strive to create a home in Las Vegas
    • How our built environment and culture impacts those efforts
    • Some possible solutions to building a sense of community in Southern Nevada.

    Be-Longing Las Vegas: Blue Diamond

    May 12, 2008

We look at the small, tight-knit community of Blue Diamond, which is fighting the sort of development that has swallowed the Las Vegas Valley by preserving its past.

    Western High School Dropouts

    Jun 19, 2008

Across the nation there are some 1700 high schools where less than 60% of incoming freshmen graduate. Fifteen of these so-called "dropout factories" are right here in Clark County. We try to find out why and hear what's being done to reverse those figures. Adam Burke reports on the latest efforts to keep students on track to graduate at Western High School.

    Mr. Happiness

    May 13, 2008

The self-proclaimed Mr. Happiness is symbolic of the fearlessness it takes for many in this region to reach out to strangers. Meantime residents of a Downtown Las Vegas neighborhood meet at "The Flamingo Club" in an effort to get to know their neighbors.

    Interior Spaces Liveability

    May 14, 2008

We'll look at the architectural designs of the Las Vegas homes of the 1950s. Their airy, glass-punctuated structures are popular with Southern Nevadans seeking an alternative to the stucco homes that dominate the region's residential landscape. So who's living the Mid-Mod life, and why did stucco become the dominant design of the valley landscape?

    The Secret Life of Clowns

    Jul 11, 2008

How do creative artists in Las Vegas recharge? It's wonderful to perform for a living, but what happens when you have to perform the same show hundreds of times each year without being able to try anything new? Is the dilemma of maintaining creativity one so essential to creative artists that there simply is no solution to mixing art and commerce, or to making a living from your art?
