The Titanic is an appropriate name for a dish that will sink to the bottom of your belly. The signature dessert at this Italian-American institution is basically a banana split on steroids: Hot brownies are smothered with scoops of ice cream, whipped cream, hot fudge, chopped fruit and cookies. It’s sloppy, but so what? Just because it’s not polished doesn’t mean your entire table won’t polish it off.
Before dessert you might try the nine-inch high eggplant parmigiana or a heaping plate of pasta topped with meatballs, sausage or mixed seafood. Or perhaps you’d prefer a clam sauce? Meat lovers can choose from more than 15 beef, veal and chicken dishes, such as the Porterhouse Contadina: a 42-ounce steak, a pound of Italian sweet sausage, roasted potatoes and sautéed peppers. Carmine’s huge portions are served Southern Italian family style. – D.L.
